About OpsWorq
What does OpsWorq do, in one sentence?
OpsWorq designs, builds, and continuously improves the operational systems that allow a business to work as one organization. In practice: operations, web presence, growth and exit, and fractional leadership here, and managed IT at opsworq.net.
Why “OpsWorq”, and how do I say it?
“OpsWorq, with a Q.” It sounds like “ops work”; the Q is the mark. We’re not OpsWork, an unrelated company.
Who would we actually work with?
The two principals, Mark Champion and Jennifer Bailey, and specialists they bring in when an engagement needs one.
Are you a consultancy, an agency or an IT company?
All three kinds of work, done as one: we design the operation, build what it needs, and keep it running. The comparison.
Why two websites?
opsworq.net is for IT: something broken, a provider to replace, a plan to price. opsworq.com is for the rest of the business. Same people, one phone number. Why two sites.
Working with us
How do we start?
With a 20-minute review, booked online or by phone. No preparation needed.
What happens in the 20-minute review?
You describe what isn’t working. We tell you what’s likely causing it, what it would take, and whether we’re the right people. If someone else is a better fit, we’ll tell you who.
Do we have to commit to anything?
No. Nothing is signed until you’ve seen a written proposal, and nothing monthly auto-renews.
How long before we see a change?
Usually inside the first phase, because discovery almost always surfaces a leak worth fixing straight away.
What do you need from us?
Time with the people who do the work, and a decision-maker who can approve change.
Pricing and billing
What does it cost?
$150 an hour for most work and $300 an hour for fractional COO or CIO leadership. Projects and web presence work are quoted per client, in writing, and the pricing page shows typical ranges. Pricing.
Why do you publish your rates?
Because you shouldn’t need a sales call to find out whether you can afford us.
What does after-hours, weekend and holiday work cost?
$225 an hour, the same as our managed IT side.
Do you charge for travel?
Travel costs are passed through at cost, with no markup, and agreed before booking. Travel time isn’t billed on retainers or projects, and is half rate on hourly work.
What’s never billed?
The 20-minute review, telling you whether we can help, the Presence Review, the Operational Assessment, re-explaining a quote, fixing our own mistakes, and extra hours you didn’t agree to first.
How are projects priced?
After discovery, in writing, with the scope, the test plan, the schedule and the fee. The number on the quote is the number on the invoice.
Value-based arrangements
Will you take a share of the results, or equity, instead of fees?
For the right engagement, we’ll consider it. The conditions.
What makes an engagement a fit for that?
A result that can be measured fairly, a baseline both sides accept, and advisers on both sides who agree.
Why don’t you do it for every client?
Because most work can’t be measured cleanly enough to price that way, and pretending otherwise isn’t fair to either side.
Fractional and interim leadership
What’s the difference between fractional and interim?
Fractional is part of the week for as long as it helps. Interim covers a vacant role through a transition.
How many hours does a fractional COO need?
It depends on the work. Retainers start at 8 hours a month, and the calculator shows the cost at any number of hours.
Can you help us hire our permanent COO or CIO?
Yes, and it’s included in a fractional retainer.
Who would our fractional leader be?
One of the two principals, matched to the work: usually Mark for technology leadership, Jennifer for operations and people.
Operations
Are we too small for this?
It turns on complexity, not headcount. If one person can still hold the whole business in their head, it’s usually too early, and we’ll say so.
Are you going to rip out our systems?
Usually not. Sometimes the technology isn’t the problem at all, and new software would just move the failure.
Will our people actually use the SOPs you write?
We write them with the people who do the work, try them on a real shift, and keep them current.
What if we’re not ready to change anything?
Then we’re probably not the right fit yet, and we’ll say so. OpsWorq is for companies that want to get better.
Automation and AI
Will automation replace our staff?
Our aim is to take the repetitive part of a job off a person, not the person off the payroll. What you do with the time is your decision.
How do you test automation before it goes live?
It runs beside the old way until the results match, then takes over and is watched for 30 days, with every run logged.
Is our data used to train AI?
Not by us. Where a tool processes your data, we tell you which tool and on what terms, and we use business plans whose terms exclude training wherever that option exists.
Who’s responsible if an automation gets something wrong?
A named person in your business owns each one, we maintain it, and every run is logged.
Web presence
Why is web presence an operations job?
Because customers judge your operation by the part they can see, and what they see is produced by routines: who answers, who updates, who owns the listing. The full answer.
What’s in the free web presence analysis?
A person checks what a stranger finds and sends one page back within one business day, with the two things to fix first.
Do you build websites?
Yes: simple, fast ones your own staff can change. And we look after the listings and reviews that usually matter more.
Can you fix our Google listing and reviews?
Yes. Claiming, correcting and keeping it right, and a review routine that follows Google’s rules and the FTC’s.
Growth and exit
Whose side are you on in a deal?
Yours. We represent one party in a transaction, never both.
Will you sign an NDA?
Yes, a mutual one, before you tell us anything sensitive. Tick the box on the contact form and we’ll send it with our reply.
Do you replace our broker, attorney or CPA?
No. We work alongside them; our part is the operation.
When should we call before a sale?
Ideally a year or more before you go to market. Operational gaps close best before buyers look.
Anywhere in the country
Do you work outside the Southeast?
Yes. Operations, growth and exit, leadership and web presence work happen anywhere in the U.S. On-site IT is regional and runs from opsworq.net.
Do you come on site?
When it helps: usually for discovery and then on a regular cadence. Most of the work is remote and scheduled.
What are your hours, and what about time zones?
Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm Eastern. The booking page shows times in your own time zone, and we schedule around you.
